Organic Waste Health and Safety code

In accordance with Wessex Water's Health and Safety policy we ask that you comply with all the following points whilst on each of our sites. Any breach of these rules may lead to exclusion from the site.

Remember - Health and Safety is not an optional extra

DO
green_tick Wear PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) at all times whilst on site
  • High visibility jackets
  • Steel toe-capped footwear
  • Gloves when in contact with equipment, waste and/or final effluent
  • Hard hats with chin straps, when in designated areas
  • Additional items e.g. Dust Masks, Hearing Protection etc. when required and when directed by site personnel.
  Appropriate clothing to minimise contact with waste (i.e. a suitable top and trousers. Shorts are not permitted.)
green_tick REPORT TO Treatment Centre when arriving on site or leaving. Visitors must enter all required details in the Visitor's Book.
green_tick OBSERVE the site speed limit of 10 MPH.
green_tick PARK IN A DESIGNATED parking area or space - check with the site personnel if you are unsure.
green_tick FOLLOW PATHS AND WALKWAYS where they are provided.
green_tick WALK WITH CAUTION as some surfaces may be wet and slippery.
green_tick Vistors and contractors  must CARRY A MOBILE PHONE when on site, if you are unaccompanied. Please leave details with the Treatment Centre Office in case there is an emergency. DO NOT use a mobile phone whilst operating or working on plant or machinery.
green_tick FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS given to you by the site personnel.
green_tick OBEY all site signs, instructions and any additional site rules.
green_tick REPORT any matter concerning you to site personnel.
green_tick BE AWARE of all traffic and DO NOT pass behind any vehicle that is reversing.
green_tick TAKE CARE WHEN REVERSING. All Drivers please ensure the area behind you is clear before reversing.
green_tick CLEAN UP ALL SPILLAGES - please clean up all spillages using the final effluent that is supplied through the black hoses. FINAL EFFLUENT IS NOT TO BE USED FOR WASHING VEHICLES.
green_tick REMOVE any soiled clothing or footwear before entering your vehicle or leaving the site.
green_tick WASH YOUR HANDS at the end of each visit.
green_tick PLEASE READ the driver's notice board in the Treatment Centre Office and make a note of any information that might affect you whilst on site. If you have any comments or suggestions about how we could improve our service please inform the site personnel or the Organic Waste manger on 01225 524560.
   
DO NOT
cross SMOKE ON SITE - Smoking is prohibited on all Wessex Water sites.
cross CONSUME ALCOHOL or use any ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE whilst on site.
cross ENTER or LEAVE the site without informing the site personnel and/or completing the Visitor's Book.
cross APPROACH the working area of the site unless you are accompanied by Site Personnel or have their permission.
cross INTERFERE with any equipment or machinery without Wessex Water's authorisation.
cross TOUCH plant or equipment as this may be contaminated with waste or Final Effluent (FE) which may contain micro-organisms. These can enter the body via the mouth, nose, cuts or other breaks in the skin, and may cause harm.
cross WALK BEHIND or among vehicles when they are moving or when their engines are running.
cross ENTER a confined or enclosed space without permission from the site management.
cross LEAN OR CLIMB over railings or safety barriers around equipment.
cross ALTER THE OPERATIONAL STATUS of machinery or equipment without permission from site personnel.
cross EAT, DRINK, SMOKE or put your hands near your mouth when working with sewage.

Additional H & S requirements for Contractors working on Treatment Centre sites

All work carried out by contractors MUST follow a CONTROL OF CONTRACTORS FORM issued by an authorised person. The contractor should ensure the following:

No work commences until a Control of Contractors form has been completed, read and understood.

All persons are fully trained to carry out the work

A full report detailing the work carried out should be left with site personnel  before leaving the site.
