Under Construction

Bristol's premier food waste anaerobic digestion treatment plant

A state of the OW-winter11-1art food waste rocessing facility, with the capacity to receive up to 40,000 tonnes of food waste per year, is now under construction at Bristol sewage treatment works in Avonmouth.

At full capacity the plant will be capable of supplying energy needs for more than 3,000 homes and create around 20,000 tonnes of nutrient rich fertiliser for local farms.

The facility will begin accepting food waste deliveries as early as autumn 2012.

Wessex Water has been digesting sewage sludge for nearly 40 years and this plant builds on that considerable wealth of experience in harnessing renewable energy through anaerobic digestion. The potential of anaerobic digestion as a means of delivering renewable energy solutions gained national and international acclaim with the launch of GENeco's much publicised poo-powered VW Bio-Bug car.

Tanker drivers delivering to Bristol treatment centre will have noticed
the pre-construction of the plant with the clearance of the site to the left of the main entrance to the sewage treatment works.

A contract has been placed with Finning for delivery of the food waste plant. The plant design and process engineering technology is being provided by Monsal with civil engineering provided by Damar.

The plant is based on a Monsal design that is operating in Scotland and
is currently one of only two facilities in the UK that has obtained
PAS 110 certification - the quality hallmark and assurance for fertilisers derived from food waste products.

Over the coming months GENeco Organic Waste customers can expect to see a lot more traffic and activity as they approach the treatment centre. Fortunately the main construction site is after the entrance to the treatment centre therefore access and turnaround times should not be routinely affected.

Julian Okoye, GENeco's business development manager said: 'Our Avonmouth site is an excellent location with easy access from Bristol and the M4 and M5 motorway networks. The site has a longstanding track record of offering some of the best and most competitive treatment and customer service standards anywhere in the UK. The GENeco food waste treatment centre is an innovative and yet natural progression for us and has already generated significant interest from potential customers across the South West and Wales.'
